Description

The majestic interior of the San Francisco church and convent in the historic city center of Quito, Ecuador. The construction of the church began two weeks after founding the city in 1534, by a Flemish Franciscan friar named Joos de Rijcke (adapted to Jodoco Ricke in Ecuador), and ended in 1680. The convent is the largest religious construction in colonial Latin America, and is sometimes dubbed the "Escorial of the New World".

Baroque and Mudejar are the two styles that are mainly used for the interior decorations. The famous "Virgin of Quito" by Bernardo de Legarda, dating from 1734, is housed in the church. She has many different names, but iconographically she is known as the Virgin of the Apocalypse as described in Saint John's Revelations.

Quito and Krakow were the first cities in the world to be declared Unesco World Heritage in 1978. The city has a long history of preservation and restoration of its marvelous religious art, boasting the famous Art School of Quito.
