The Phayao lake is the third biggest lake, located in the north of Thailand, and covers an area of 2,3 km² at an altitude of 380 m. On the north side, the lake is fed by the Ing river and empties in the east in the same river which flows further into the mighty Mekong.

The lake is artificial and counts 22 fish species, with the Nile Tilapia as the most prominent. It's usual for Thai people to sit by the lake and do picnics. Many restaurants in the city of Phayao offer barbequed tilapia.

It was created in 1939 to improve the irrigation in the area. With its creation a temple dating back from the 15th century, the Wat Tilok Aram, got submerged. Today many people take boats to the place of the temple and make offers on the lake.
