Artist's Comments
The Akha ethnic minority originates from China. Many migrated to Thailand and Laos in the early 20th century. Nowadays about 80 000 Akha live in the northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.
They speak Akha, a language from the Tibeto-Burman family. In the past they were known to grow opium, but nowadays they switched to mountain rice, corn and soybeans. Another economic revenue comes from the tourism industry, with tours visiting villages where people can buy arts & crafts "made" by the Akha. From what i've seen they mostly play the role of intermediaries. Not much of the crafts are made in the villages, except for the traditional hats as you can see here.
