The famous béguinage (FR) or begijnhof (NL) of Bruges, Belgium. They were founded in the Low Countries (Belgium & Netherlands) during the 12th century and housed 'beguines'. These are religious women who served god without retiring from the world.
In a architectural way these béguinages comprise a courtyard, and surrounded by small dwellings. It was usually surrounded by a wall to separate it from the city, creating a city within the city.
