A view over the city centre of Strasbourg, France. Intertwined by canals, the centre of the city (dubbed "la petite France") is located on an island and is Unesco World Heritage since 1988. The city houses about 280 000 people in the city itself, but more than 750 000 if calculated with the metropolitan area. Strasbourg is the capital of the Lower Rhine (Bas Rhin) department and is close to the German border. Several European institutions are housed here, as the Council of Europe, Eurocorps, and the European Parliament (once a month all the Eurocrats move everything from Brussels to Strasbourg and back as it is stated that the Parliament has to seat once a month in Strasbourg).
