Description
Tuol Sleng is known as Security Office 21 or S-21 during the Khmer Rouge period between 17 april 1975 and 7 january 1979. Previously it hosted the Tuol Svay Prey Highschool. Nowadays it is a genocide museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. S-21 was designed for detention, interrogation, inhuman torture and killing after confession from the detainees. Imprisonment lasted 2-4 months, political prisoners were held between 6 to 7 months. About 17 000 people were killed, 4 were found alive when the Vietnamese army "liberated" the country from the Khmer Rouge. Between 1975 and 1979 about 2,1 million Cambodians died (out of the 8 million inhabitants, makes it 1 in 4) under the malnutrition and attrocities carried out under the Khmer Rouge.
Little fact: Tuol Sleng means "Hill of the poisoned trees".
