One of the 49 towers in the Bayon temple at sunrise in Angkor Thom, Cambodia. Each of these towers symbolize king Jayavarman VII (1181-1219) in the form of the Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara.
If we add the 5 gates of Angkor Thom, with each such a tower we have a total of 54 towers, symbolizing the 54 provinces of the Khmer Empire (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, South and Central Vietnam) in the 11th & 12th century. 5 + 4 = 9, a lucky number in Mahayana Buddhism. We have 4 faces per tower, which makes 216 heads. 2 + 1 + 6 = 9. You can speak hours about this fantastic temple, you'll have to visit it yourself, one day.
