Cambodia - Angkor Thom by lux69aeterna Cambodia - Angkor Thom by lux69aeterna
This photograph was taken at the entrance of Angkor Thom near the city Siem Reap, Cambodia. On most gates there is a row of 54 demons on one side and 54 Gods on the other. It's a motif taken from the story of the "Churning of the ocean of milk".

The city of Angkor Thom (Great Angkor or Great City) has an epic scale of 10 km² and was built by Angkor's greatest king, Jayavarman VII (1181-1219). At the city's height it may have supported a population of one million people in the surrounding region.

Nice picture. The statue look very "Oh yes I am cool!". There is calm feeling in this image, nice composition. What is this city's relation with Angkor Wat?

Angkor Wat, is the City(capital)-Temple, while Angkor Thom means the Big Capital or Big City... This was the very last Angkorian capital, made by Jayavarman the 7th. And it got attacked many times by the Siamese, from Ayuthaya in present day Thailand... And finally sacked in the 15th century if i remember well :)

In the end there are more than 100 temples in Angkor, and 44 which can be visited... And each with its own history. The temples date from the 9th to 14th century... Angkor Wat is just one of them, but the biggest and most famous.

How hot is the weather there?

Hot, hotter, hottest :)

The coldest you might have at night in 'winter' is 22-24°... If it is 28° during the day, i felt it as cold :) And it can go up till 36-42° in april-may.

I wanted to add a picture to my favorites of Angkor Wat because I just recently went there. Yours really caught my eye. It's beautiful the way you placed the landscape, the moat, and the statue all together in one stunning photograph. The colors are not too bright yet they contrast quite nicely with the shadows. Stunning really.

i love the soft sunset in the background and to me the statue seems to be looking out to the river
the tree silhouettes together with the whole photo makes it beautiful

More than glad people can "learn" something about other cultures :)

SOme of my clients asked me yesterday, or told me they see i like to teach things to others... Everybody was very happy of the tour. 24 people, and all left now, and i'm alone... Pfff :(

Thank you a lot :)

This picture won some kind of contest on a Belgian forum. You can post pictures for let's say very critical response, and every week they select the 6-7 best pictures from all categories. Then they get into the "Hall of fame" and they'll get printed at the end of the year in a book. Already the third of mine this year going in that Hall of fame, but the funny thing is that some pictures getting more "success" on DA don't necesserily get much attention there. Very strange... Maybe worth a scientific research :)

Thank you very much Karla :) This one made it to the "Hall of Fame" on a Belgian forum, so it'll end in a book at the end of the season. Every week they select the best 5-7 shots out of different categories.

I may have a very nice one for within a few days... A lovely boat on a lovely beach by sunset. But i wait some more days...
