Belgium - Seagulls by lux69aeterna Belgium - Seagulls by lux69aeterna
I won't tell you how i made the seagulls fly away to avoid the WWF, Greenpeace and other animal organisations to give me bad publicity... but i can tell you this was taken in Oostende, Belgium... where seagulls are apparently treated with respect...

My comment made me think of a quote in a famous dark Belgian movie "C'est arrivé près de chez vous": “Tu tues une baleine, tu auras les écolos, Greenpeace, le commandant Cousteau sur le dos, mais décime un banc de sardines, j’aime autant te dire qu’on t’aidera à les mettre en boîtes…“

It says... “kill a whale and you’ll have ecologists, Greenpeace, Commandant Cousteau on your tracks but slaughter a shoal of sardines, I’m telling you, they’ll help you put them in tins…“

[hi, Sebastien]

Merci beaucoup, for making me fall in love with my native country again. I had lost it a very long time ago, but you made me remember the good things again. :rose:

You are most welcome :) You have been long time out of the country then? It sounds strange, most people value Belgium more when going abroad :)

Hm, no, it's been two years and a half (living in Australia now). I frankly never valued Belgium as a great (nature) country to live in. I llived in Izegem, Kortrijk and Gent and I always experienced a huge lack of nature. Of course we have the Ardennes and parts of the coast, but you have to travel quite a while to get there. Now I just step outside and I'm surrounded by forests, parks, mountains and creeks. The only thing I miss is (some) of my family and friends.

Yes, in the end it is all a matter of point of view :) I've been 4 years in Asia, and 1 year in central and south America the past 5 years... But i'm always happy to be back in Belgium for 1 or 2 months a year. A lack of nature, maybe, but does it make a human happy? I'm now mostly in national parks for the last 5 months, i value the nature, but i miss culture, people, gastronomy... I can't live off nature alone... A combination of it all is better :) To me Belgium is still the best place to live... But in the end, i'm scared i can't live there anymore either. But i'll try, maybe by the end of this year. Moving all the time and not staying more than 2 nights in the same area is a strange way to live. Then suddenly work in an office, could be too much of a change... And the Belgian people, i don't know. I'll see what the future has to offer me :)

I think when you live in Australia, the distances from the West Flanders to the Ardennes are nothing, isn't it? :) You still speak Dutch? And why did you move to Australia 2 years and a half ago?

You're very correct in saying that distances in Belgium are nothing compared to Australia, however, nature is everywhere here (or at least where I live - in Brisbane). I don't even mean being out there in the bush or forests, but just walking through the streets in the suburbs is an experience in itself. I couldn't get over the fact that there are trees, flowers, parks and forests everywhere upon my first arrival, no matter where you are in the city. And I have the best of both worlds here, which is the reason why I would have a hard time adjusting to Belgium again.

I came to Australia for a work-holiday year, but I stuck around when I met my husband. Hence my stay. I still speak Dutch, though I've forgotten a lot of my French (which I sincerely regret). If I could afford it, I'd love to visit Belgium for a month or so every year, but probably not much longer. At the same token though, I don't think that I'd stay here if I didn't have my husband. But I'd have a hard time settling in Belgium as well. Perhaps I'd just start traveling and see where it'd bring me.

It's interesting to hear your story, are you a tour guide or something along those lines? The kind of life that you described is something that I would love to do, had I not settled down. And probably would've done, had it been on offer just a few years ago. The traveling/adventure bug in me keeps flattering up as soon as there are thoughts of going for a road-trip, holiday or trek. So you plan on settling down in Belgium again? You speak Dutch too?
