Description

The city of Oostende, previously known as the "Queen of sea resorts" (Koningin der Badsteden) is the biggest city on the Belgian coast. There are 70 000 inhabitants and during summer it grows till 300 000 because of tourism. The first settlements date from the 9th century, located on the east of the island Testerep. So you understand now the name Oostende which would mean Eastend (of the island). By the 11th century the island merged with the lands and the city could grow steadily. During the Spanish rule, it was one of the last bastions of protestantism and it got under siege for three years. As the city walls were attacked, the insiders built a second and third wall, so they could withstand such a long time. During the 19th and 20th century it was a royal sea resort where the kings of Europe came to enjoy summer. As the Belgian royalty was investing a lot of money in the resort it became a beautiful Belle Epoque city, later with Art Deco additions. Sadly most of this was lost during the destructions of the world wars.

Nowadays it is a modern city filled with restaurants, parks, shopping streets, various train connections (Brussels, Paris, London, Köln, Amsterdam, Lille...) and the beaches by the North Sea of course! On the left you can see the Thermae Palace that dates from 1933 and was one of the first centers for thalassotherapy. This is also the city i've been living most of my life in, so it's always a nice thing to walk 10 minutes to get to the beach and photograph beautiful sunsets. I hope you like it!
